Turbocharged flat-four engines? How is the character? Is driving engagement lost? Can anything be as good as a Porsche flat-six? Has Weissach ruined its roadster? The Boxster, after all, has seen its share of undulating perceptions. From the original concept car - still one of the best automotive design exercises in history - that debuted at the 1993 Detroit auto show to the first-generation 986 Boxster to the 987 to the 981 unveiled in 2012, Porsche's now 20-year-old production sports car has taken it from all sides. Indeed, the new Porsche 718s remain focused performance cars, with sublime balance through corners, and the engine and chassis changes mean they take those corners faster than ever before. Porsche's did not just want to replicate the superior handling of the last Boxster, it wanted to improve upon on it. So the chassis received loads of tweaks like a strengthened subframe to improve lateral rigidity, and the suspension gained larger pistons and aggressive retuning. For those wondering what the new 718 badge signifies, it is Porsche's way of paying homage to its race cars of the '50s and '60s, which also housed four-banger engines. This is proudly tagged on a body that has been resculpted for a wider, beefier appearance. The 2.0-liter in the Boxster shares parts and engineering/technology with the new turbo flat-six engines found in the 911 range. The 2.0 makes 300 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 280 lb-ft of torque from 1,950 to 4,500 rpm. That is a horsepower increase of 35 over the old naturally aspirated 2.7liter flat-six, with an additional 74 lb-ft compared to the outgoing engine. Porsche says that the car will run from 0-60 mph in 4.7 seconds with the PDK gearbox. That is 0.7 second quicker than what Porsche cited for the previous Boxster, a significant improvement. Top speed increases to 170mph, gain of 7 mph. Our virtually brande new example comes in Agate Grey with full black leather.
